Grief waits for nothing…it just happens. For the professional, sometimes grief is big and obvious, and sometimes it’s small and builds inside you quietly. Cultivating an understanding of the self is part of the skill-set required to counter the effects of loss, allowing for growth to continue within your chosen career.

Calibrating career while grief is present can be made easier when you know who you are and the triggers that impede success. By acquiring awareness about your coping styles, you procure specific ways to handle the little griefs and the bigger griefs, which impinge on day to day interactions and on the career long haul. Cultivating an understanding of the self is part of the skill-set required to counter the effects of loss, allowing for growth to continue within your chosen career.

Grief is a part of life. It shows up because of big losses, like the death of a loved one and in little losses, like being fired. Which can become a big loss if you don’t find another job or you’ve aged out of a job or have reached your peak. The sooner you name what is happening re: grief response, the sooner it stops getting in the way of your next move. It’s hard to think about the next move when grief takes up residence. It’s hard to think. It’s hard to be innovative or to be creative.
