“I hurt myself today

To see if I still feel

I focus on the pain

The only thing that’s real

What have I become

My sweetest friend?

Everyone I know

Goes away in the end”

— Johnny Cash, Hurt

Grief doesn’t follow a certain path. Each step in this very personal dance is defined by the journey of getting acquainted with a self you may have never known. Grief brings new feelings, new thoughts and new challenges to overcome.

For family, it may seem that you are depressed. Friends may feel you are detached. Coworkers sense you are distracted. Others have impressions and opinions on what they believe you are experiencing or what they believe you should be experiencing. However, in grief, you will stand alone. It is your our own unique experience. It is your own personal journey. Your own dance.

This is the Third Phase of Grief. It is here where the 3 D’s are explored and unpacked. Distraction, Depression and Detachment. The 3 D’s do their own dance as they weave in and out with one another making it difficult to distinguish between them.
