The 5 Senses and Burnout: Smell
Use the tools you already have to recalibrate.
As we move into Fall, and indoors, our worlds will once again shift and it will be up to the individual to recalibrate their day-to-day. This is also a time when we might be holding onto past seasons, not just Summer, but past seasons of joy, warmth, calm. Reminiscing is inevitable, yet, it is these times of transition when burnout may sneak up.
Although burnout can feel like a permanent shroud, the potential for recalibration exists within. Though it might feel unattainable, the ability to tap into immediate self-care is always available. The gift of finding these exercises or go-to’s when facing the daily presence of burnout is the benefit of attending to your inner and outer layers.
One way to discover your own unique way to deal with burnout in the moment is to train your brain to practice being mindful of the inner and outer world around you… and it doesn’t have to be a psychological deep dive to gain more agency in your shifting moods.
Think About the Smells You Enjoy
Did you know that the sense of smell evokes a memory faster than any of the other senses? That’s why when people sell a house, they make sure to have cookies baking in the oven. They use the smell of freshly baked cookies to lure the buyer in by creating an association with the positive memories of a childhood home. Your senses are working all the time, even when you’re not aware of them.
Be mindful of subtle mood shifts and think about them without judgment. Let your mind return to the task at hand.
Are you aware of your moods and how they fluctuate? Are there any patterns?
